A regulator reduces the gas pressure from the storage cylinder to the pressure required at the engine air intake. The CNG regulator reduces pressure in three stages.

Pressure reduction and gas expansion cause a substantial drop in temperature inside the regulator. To compensate, some hot water leaving the engine passes through the regulator housing.

The CNG regulator also has a solenoid valve that cuts off gas flow when the engine runs on petrol or is switched off.
