The thermostat housing is made from AS9U3 aluminium by pressure die casting. Areas requiring machining are subsequently shaped by material removal. It interfaces with five other components:

Cylinder head: the housing is secured to the cylinder head with three screws. Thermostat cover: three screws connect the housing to the cover, placing the thermostat in the water flow path.

Connecting tube: this is press-fitted into the housing and connects to the water-transfer hose. Sensor: this measures the engine’s circulating water temperature and screws into the housing through its threaded end. Bleed screw: this screws into the housing beside the sensor.

Important areas include the cylinder-head mating surface, cover mating surface, connecting-tube bore and sensor thread. The positions of the cylinder-head and cover mounting holes and leak tightness are also important.
